Tuning In
Read the story app The Artifacts written by Lynley Stace and Dan Hare. It tells the story of Asaf, a 13-year old boy who loves to collect things, from fine art to "bagatelles, baubles, gewgaws and gimmicks." One day, his parents inform him they are moving and have thrown out his treasures, and he is not allowed to collect anything else in his new home. After a period of despair, Asaf discovers his inner resources and begins to collect thoughts, ideas, stories, and more.
This resource is an interesting way to introduce the concept: Types of resources (natural, human, capital) and the ways societies use them in order to satisfy the needs and wants of present and future generations (ACHEK002).
Questions -Why might Asaf be collecting things ?
By taking away Asafs possessions what did Asafs parents want him to gain ?
Do parents take things away from children in order for them to gain something more meaningful ? ( e.g. a dummy, teddy, phone )

Authentic Learning
Involve the students in an authentic activity that is relevant to the students and their community. Students at Parafield Gardens are involved in raising awareness and money to sponsor a sun bear called Mili living in a Cambodian sanctuary. Parafield Gardens is a Peace school promoting 'peace with the environment'. The students are responsible for setting up stalls, informing the community about the plight of bears and the implications of palm oil and advertising at our annual fair.
