Trade Offs - activities to help students understand the trade-offs made in order to get what they need/want

How the concept of opportunity cost involves choices about the alternative use of resources and the need to consider trade-offs

1.    explaining why when one choice is made, the next best alternative is not available (trade-off), for example if a student chooses to spend their time (resource) riding their bike after school, they cannot go for a swim (trade-off)

2.    explaining why choices have to be made when faced with unlimited wants and limited resources, for example by compiling a list of personal needs and wants, determining priorities (including sustainability of natural environments), and identifying the needs and wants that can be satisfied with the resources available

Download the powerpoint to the right to use with the book. ( some pages shown here )
The powerpoint also helps to cover themes of family relationships, imagery in narratives, grief and the history of whaling.
In the book the main character has to make trade-offs involving friendships, family relationships, study and work.

This file was a powerpoint based on the penguin notes of the book. With my class I have asked the students to research the topics of
Abalone - biology of, overfishing of and industry
Tiger Sharks - biology of, environmental impact and the industry.
Diving - science of
Margaret River/WA region- geography
Tim Winton - biography and we covered his role in helping preserve the Ningaloo Reef.
Aboriginal Perspective - the history of the women pearl divers in Broome.

It was used in my literacy lessons to also cover vocabulary and the use of imagery.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Is it a need or a want?
Brainstorm the needs of all humans. Prioritise the needs in order for humans to survive.

Provide headings found on the pyramid diagram and a triangle for students to work in small groups to arrange Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in order of priority based on their prior knowledge. Students report back to justify their work. Ask students to colour code the sections of the pyramid to represent importance. Show students the accurate diagram and debate ideas and discuss the colours chosen.

Types of Resources
Reflect on the needs and wants of humans and discuss the resources required to satisfy the needs and wants.

Categorise the needs and wants under the following headings on a chart:
  • Need
  • Want
  • Resource
